Music for People: A Free Improvisation Workshop with Terry Keevil

Have you ever wished you could just make music without worrying about playing the "right" notes? Have you ever wanted to chuck the etude book and just make something up? Here's your chance!

Terry Keevil, oboist, performer, teacher, and a leader in the music improvisation organization, Music for People, will be offering a complimentary workshop at Stony Brook University on Sunday, February 28, 2010. The event will be held in the Choral Room, located in the basement of the Music Building, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.

Based on the premise that any combination of people and instruments can make music together in fresh and innovative ways, Music for People workshops welcome musicians of all backgrounds and abilities. By participating in simple activities designed to deepen listening and musical expression, participants experience the joy of individual and collective music making in a safe and supportive environment. Open to everyone who loves music – instrumentalists, singers, performers, listeners.

Chamber Music Program at Stony Brook
Now accepting applications

Each semester, participants are placed in compatible chamber music groups and meet with a coach for five 90-minute sessions in preparation for a concert in the Staller Center Recital Hall. We encourage participants to reserve weekend afternoon and evenings for rehearsals, as that is the time when music studios in the Staller Center are most accessible. In addition to the five coached sessions, we also encourage groups to meet and rehearse on their own.  All instruments and levels are welcome, but the ability to read music is a prerequisite.

Spring Schedule:
March 1:  Spring Registration Due

March 15 – May 22: Open Rehearsal Period
May 22:  Dress Rehearsal
May 23:  Concert at 3:00 PM, Staller Center Recital Hall
